Vetiver is Jean-Baptiste Bernadet's latest solo exhibition at Galerie Valentin Paris, presenting a group of new works from his Vetiver series. This group of large works is created by spreading the paint directly on the canvas; the contamination and metamorphosis of colors make their surfaces changing and variable. The series borrows its name from an exotic root used in perfumery in order to produce woody and earthy fragrances. The sensory saturation of these polymorphous works provokes a sort of chromatic narcosis; also, they implicitly refer to the landscape genre, condensing in a single painting diverse historical pictorial registers – paysagisme, expressionism, impressionism. As Clara Guislan writes in the exhibition’s press release, “Bernadet is interested in how the gaze is directed across the canvas, perturbing the chronology of apparition […] while multiplying the vanishing points and playing on the […] emphatic aspects of color, the ‘cinemascope’ effect of the large formats and their spatial articulation”.
