Jessica Silverman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by artists affiliated with Mexico City’s famed kurimanzutto gallery. Titled “from here to there,” the show will include historic and new works by sixteen of kurimanzutto’s thirty-three artists including Leonor Antunes, Allora & Calzadilla, Marieta Chirulescu, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Minerva Cuevas, Jimmie Durham, Daniel Guzmán, Jonathan Hernández, Gabriel Kuri, Dr. Lakra, Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Gabriel Sierra, Adrián Villar Rojas, Danh Vo, and Haegue Yang.

kurimanzutto was founded by José Kuri, Monica Manzutto and artist Gabriel Orozco. The gallery first opened in summer of 1999 in an indoor market with an unorthodox show that lasted less than twenty-four hours. A nomadic gallery without a permanent exhibition space for several years, kurimanzutto went on to occupy a variety of venues, such as a rug store, parking lot, cinema, amusement park and airport. The freedom and risk-taking that characterized these early group shows metamorphosed into collaborations with art galleries abroad where kurimanzutto acted as an ambassador for the generation of Mexican artists it represented. The first of these transatlantic shows was in 2001 at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris. Later venues included Foksal Gallery in Warsaw and Galerie Patrick Seguin in Paris.

Jessica Silverman Gallery has the pleasure of being kurimanzutto’s latest ally. The show “from here to there” features sculptures, paintings, videos and drawings that together comprise a portrait of kurimanzutto today. The exhibition presents a confluence of the Mexican artists that were part of the raison d’être for the founding of the gallery (i.e. Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Gabriel Kuri, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Dr Lakra, and Daniel Guzmán). It also includes artists who have joined in recent years, such as Haegue Yang, Marieta Chirulescu and Allora & Calzadilla. Danh Vo’s crimson wool rugs serve as bridges between these generational groups, acting as plinths to connect their work at different levels.

The show contains significant historical pieces even though it is not, strictly speaking, a retrospective of the gallery’s sixteen years. “from here to there” offers a carefully curated selection of works, rich in clues and hints, which foster a rewarding international conversation whose perspective is rooted in the Latin American art world.
